The Cast is the heart of The Black Sesame, and it runs on two characters who could not be more different. There's the lead. There's the understudy. And the whole show only works because both of them showed up.
Meet the lead: The Black Sesame
He's the flavor that doesn't ask for your approval — toasted until he's bold, deep, and genuinely a little smoky, then completely at ease about it. Sunglasses on. Arms crossed. Mild was never on the table.
And here's the part people miss: the swagger is earned. Raw black sesame is mild and forgettable. Roasted, it develops range — the nutty, almost bittersweet depth that black sesame lovers chase. So when the lead acts like he's the flavor everyone came for, he's not bluffing. He did the work in the pan.
You'll find him across the collection: Bold. Smoky. Unbothered. (the motto that started the whole brand), Calcium. Iron. Attitude. (he doesn't go to the gym — he is the gym), and Never Took My Jacket Off, a quiet nod to the fact that he's unhulled: while other seeds got stripped down and polished pale, he kept the hull — the color, the minerals, the whole personality.
Meet the understudy: The Not-So-Black Sesame
The lighter seed doesn't have the sunglasses. He doesn't have the sparkles. What he has is heart, a slightly worried face, and an unshakeable commitment to showing up anyway.
He is, frankly, the most relatable character we've ever drawn. On I'm Doing My Best he says the most honest sentence in the building. On Basically a Vitamin he's just read his own nutrition label and he's as surprised as you are — calcium? present. Minerals? technically, yes. On Mild is a Choice. I Made It. he heard "bold, smoky, unbothered," genuinely considered it, and then chose a calm, reasonable life instead. And honestly? He's at peace.
Why two seeds
Because one brings the power and one brings the heart, and you need both to make a story. Put them together — same jar, same bagel — and you get the whole show. That's literally the plot of Same Bagel Energy, the only tee starring both characters: two seeds who agree on almost nothing, until a bagel shows up and the fists meet in the middle. Black and tan, side by side, the way an everything bagel actually wants them.
How they're made
Every character is hand-drawn original artwork — no clip art, no stock seeds in sunglasses. Each design is printed front and center on a soft unisex tee, made to order so nothing sits in a warehouse. Designed in California. Printed when you order it. Sweet, but not too sweet.
Pick the seed that's most you — the bold one who's already decided he's the main character, or the earnest one who's just happy to be here. There's no wrong answer. That's the whole point of an ensemble.
